Breaking New Ground:

Hybrid Previsualization
Techniques in Argylle

JUNE 24TH, 2024

The production of Argylle represents a significant leap in the use of previsualization technology, blending traditional stunt techniques with advanced digital tools. The Action Design team, led by Visualization Technical Director Jesse Pascua, Stunt Coordinator Mark Ginther, and fight coordinator Guillermo Grispo utilized a hybrid method combining “Box World,” live sets, and Unreal Engine motion capture to create dynamic and accurate stunt sequences.

Pioneering Hybrid Technology

“We used a hybrid method, using traditional Box World, live set, and Unreal Engine mocap.”

This approach allowed the team to seamlessly integrate physical and digital elements, capturing authentic movement while visualizing stunts within a digitally constructed environment.

One of the most challenging sequences was an OIL Sequence scene. The team captured the motion of ice skaters both on an ice arena and on Glice, a synthetic floor designed for skating, within a studio setting.

“This allowed us to get accurate body motion data and spatial awareness for the required stunts within the environment,”

The data was then used to inform set design and camera work, enhancing the overall realism and fluidity of the action.

Enhancing Collaboration and Design

The integration of previsualization technology also transformed the collaborative process across departments.

“We designed the set around the movement and action design of the skaters,”

After capturing the sequence, the team incorporated environment elements, which provided designers with valuable insights for refining choreography and camera angles.

However, integrating this new technology came with its own set of challenges.

“This was our first attempt in designing action with this tool, It was a learning experience for all of us, the collaboration between art and performance was a first for many.”

Despite these hurdles, the team’s ability to adapt and innovate resulted in the successful execution of complex stunt sequences.

Looking Forward: The Future of Previs
in Stunt Work

Pascua, Ginther and Grispo see the potential of previsualization technology as a game-changer for Action Design.

“As we are developing the tool, it is becoming faster to use and even better for storytelling,”

"This technology has brought the storytelling and production value to higher limits.”

As they look back on their experience with Argylle, the team is excited about the future of action design and storytelling, anticipating further advancements that will continue to elevate the art of stunt work in the film industry.
